Lichtsteiner’s departure also included the exit of assistant coach Mario Cantaluppi. In the immediate wake of the shakeup, assistant coach Luigi Nocentini has taken over training responsibilities on an interim basis. Nocentini is expected to direct the team from the touchline for Sunday’s upcoming league fixture against FC Luzern, a crucial domestic match with Luzern sitting directly one rank behind Basel with a one-point margin, according to match schedules and league reports.

Wagner’s Coaching Background and Career Path

While Luigi Nocentini prepares the squad for Sunday, club officials are simultaneously looking toward a permanent appointment. Reports from Kicker and Sport BILD indicate that Sandro Wagner has drawn serious consideration from the Basel hierarchy to take over the managerial reins.

Wagner’s coaching trajectory features rapid advancement through the German football pyramid. He began his career within the German Football Association (DFB) youth setup before taking charge of SpVgg Unterhaching. During his tenure with Unterhaching, Wagner guided the senior team to promotion into the 3. Liga in 2023. Following that success, he joined Julian Nagelsmann’s coaching staff as an assistant with the senior German national team, serving as a key tactical deputy before accepting a head coaching role in the Bundesliga with FC Augsburg.

His stint at Augsburg proved short-lived. Following a difficult run that yielded a difficult record across 14 matches, Wagner was dismissed by the Fuggerstädter roughly a year ago. Should he finalize an agreement with FC Basel, it would mark his first managerial post outside of Germany, as he never coached or played abroad during an active playing career that included stints with FC Bayern Munich, SV Darmstadt 98, and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
