In the capital city of Kyiv, at least two people were killed and multiple others injured during nighttime strikes that prompted emergency responses and air defense activations.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and Tymur Tkatschenko, the new head of the Kyiv military administration, at least two people lost their lives in Kyiv during the New Year drone assault. Rescue crews recovered the body of a woman from beneath the rubble of a house. The strikes also injured at least three people who were subsequently transported to local hospitals. Additional reports from the office of the General Prosecutor noted that at least seven individuals were injured across the capital’s center during the overnight bombardment, including two pregnant women. Emergency services also documented blast damage to public transit infrastructure, including shattered windows on a tram and impacted railbeds.
Widespread Damage Across Sumy, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia
Beyond the capital, authorities confirmed that Russian drone attacks targeted several other Ukrainian regions. In the city of Sumy, a residential building sustained heavy damage from a strike. Additional fatalities were reported in the Kharkiv region, while explosions and subsequent fires damaged multiple residential buildings in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia. Local authorities in Zaporizhzhia confirmed that rescue teams successfully pulled at least one woman from a burning home following the overnight blasts.
Official Reactions and Defense Statistics
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the holiday strikes, stating that Russia aimed exclusively to inflict pain on Ukraine even on January 1. Zelenskyy noted that there were 111 drone attacks on the country, with air defense units intercepting 63 of the drones. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and praised the ongoing work of first responders and defenders.
Broader Regional Security and Infrastructure Updates
Amid the ongoing strikes, European energy security discussions continued as regional supply adjustments took effect. Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics stated that the termination of Russian gas transit through Ukraine had no impact on German domestic supply security, confirming that national storage and terminal capacities remained available to support both domestic needs and neighboring European partners without coastal access.
