Middle-distance runner Robert Farken delivered the biggest coup of his career at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, securing a surprise gold medal in the mile event against a competitive international field.

Competing on the road in the non-olympic distance of 1.60934 kilometers, the 28-year-old German athlete clocked a winning time of 3:51.80 minutes. According to reports from regional sports broadcaster Sport im Osten, Farken edged out the slightly favored American runner Yared Nuguse, who crossed the finish line 0.53 seconds behind. Ruben Querinjean of Luxembourg took the bronze medal, finishing 0.97 seconds back from the winner.
Rebounding From Birmingham Frustration
The victory in Copenhagen marks a major career milestone for Farken, who competes for the club SG Motor Gohlis-Nord. Coming into the world championship, expectations were modest following a difficult outing at the European Championships in Birmingham. At that competition held more than a month prior, the five-time German champion fell short of his ambitions in the 1.500-meter event, finishing in a disappointing ninth place without a medal.

Reflecting on his performance in the Danish capital, Farken expressed astonishment at the result. “I didn’t expect this, of course. But I dreamed a little bit of a medal. But coming home with gold is really, really cool,” Farken said after his triumph, as reported by Sport im Osten.

Farken arrived at the global showcase holding the German national record in the mile. In late July, he established the country’s benchmark by running 3:46.82 minutes in London. That speed translated effectively to the road circuit in Copenhagen, where he navigated a crowded field of approximately 70 starters to secure the world title.
