Medical Complications Force EF Education Star Out of Montreal

Ecuadorian cycling star Richard Carapaz has pulled out of the upcoming UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, Canada, citing health complications.

Announced across official team and rider channels on Saturday, the decision arrives just as the international showcase opens this Sunday. The EF Education-EasyPost leader chose to step away to prevent major risks to his athletic career. The withdrawal followed a comprehensive medical evaluation and close consultations with his performance staff.

“As an athlete of high performance, my desire has always been to give my best and represent the colors of Ecuador with pride,” Carapaz stated in his official communication. He emphasized that adhering to strict medical advice, prioritizing his health, and targeting a swift recovery represented the most responsible course of action.

Global Championship Underway in Canada

The rider confirmed that his formal withdrawal was delivered via email to the Ecuadorian Cycling Federation (Federación Ecuatoriana de Ciclismo).

Meanwhile, the global event presses forward. Approximately 1,000 riders representing roughly 100 nations have converged in Montreal through September 27. Competitors are battling across 13 world titles spanning elite, under-23, junior, and mixed team relay categories.

Capitalizing on a Formidable 2026 Grand Tour Season

According to the sources, the elite climber recently secured fourth place overall in the Vuelta a España. That finish capped a stellar grand tour season that also boasted brilliant performances at the Tour de France.

During the French Grand Tour earlier this year, Carapaz captured two stage victories, dominated the King of the Mountains classification, and collected the coveted super-combativity award. Having recaptured his peak climbing form in the Alps, the EF Education stalwart now directs his full attention toward treatment and rehabilitation.
