According to reports verified by the German Press Agency (dpa), the Leipzig police confirmed Monday that an official criminal complaint for bodily harm has been filed following the incident at the Sporthalle Brüderstraße. The altercation took place on a Saturday evening during a Bundesliga fixture between the host team from Leipzig and the Bavarian powerhouse TSV Abensberg.

The individual at the center of the police inquiry is Akaki Japaridze, a 24-year-old guest fighter from Georgia representing the Leipzig club. Authorities confirmed that Japaridze was no longer present at the venue when law enforcement arrived on Saturday evening, having reportedly already returned to his hotel. According to dpa reporting, the Georgian athlete has since traveled back to his home country. The Leipzig police stated that the suspect is known to authorities and that there is currently no imminent danger.

How the Altercation Unfolded

The violence erupted late in the evening after the team outcome had already been decided, with the Leipzig squad securing an 8:6 victory over the serial champions from Abensberg, TSV Abensberg. Both competitors had faced each other twice within the span of an hour in the 90-kilogram weight category.

While Japaridze won the initial encounter, Cavelius claimed victory in the second bout. Following his win, the 29-year-old German national team athlete directed a celebratory gesture toward Japaridze. TSV Abensberg coach Manuel Scheibel described the ensuing reaction bluntly to dpa, stating that “the fuses blew for the Georgian fighter.” The verbal confrontation rapidly escalated into physical blows, leaving Cavelius with severe facial injuries that required immediate hospitalization and surgery.

Medical Impact and World Championship Absence

The physical toll of the attack rules Cavelius out of high-level competition for the foreseeable future. Medical examinations confirmed that the German Olympian suffered a broken jaw and lost two teeth during the altercation. He underwent emergency surgery following the incident.

The German Judo Federation (DJV) announced that the injuries have forced Cavelius to withdraw from the upcoming World Championships, scheduled for October 4 through October 11 in Baku, Azerbaijan. In a statement released through dpa, the federation emphasized the severity of the setback: “This absence is particularly bitter for our athlete with a view to the ongoing olympic qualification and his big goal to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and to compete there after Paris for his second Olympic Games.” Cavelius also serves as the athletes’ representative within the national federation.

Sporting Authorities Respond

National and international governing bodies are reviewing the incident for potential disciplinary penalties. The German Judo Federation confirmed that the International Judo Federation (IJF), the European Judo Union (EJU), and the Georgian Judo Federation were notified of the events on the day of the occurrence.

In its official communication, the DJV stressed that the disciplinary review will follow established legal and sports-law procedures, noting that the processing must be conducted objectively, consistently, and on the basis of verified facts.
