Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Luis Arraez exited Thursday’s 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers after spraining his left ankle while trying to avoid a tag at first base. Interim manager Don Mattingly confirmed X-rays were negative, leaving the team evaluating its top hitter on the eve of the postseason.

The Philadelphia Phillies saw their playoff push slowed at Citizens Bank Park, but the more pressing concern surrounded the health of infielder Luis Arraez. In the bottom of the sixth inning with the game tied 1-1, Arraez grounded a ball to Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt. A high and wide throw pulled first baseman Jake Bauers off the bag, forcing Arraez to move right to elude the tag.
As Arraez reached forward, the front of his foot caught in the dirt, causing his left ankle to roll underneath him. He immediately went down in obvious pain and stayed on the ground as trainers tended to him before helping him off the field without putting weight on his left leg.
Adding to the frustration of the inning, Arraez was called out for running out of the baseline while avoiding the tag. Interim manager Don Mattingly disputed the call after the game, arguing that the infielder’s last step remained within the allowed box.
Batting Title Chase and Postseason Uncertainty for Philadelphia
The injury strikes at a critical juncture for both Arraez and the club. Acquired from the San Francisco Giants on August 3, the veteran infielder leads the National League with a .310 batting average while chasing his fourth career batting title. Over 151 total games this season, he holds a .310/.345/.419 slash line, though his numbers dipped slightly to a .283 average with two home runs and 21 RBIs across 45 games in Philadelphia.
Mattingly confirmed that initial X-rays on the ankle came back negative. Asked if he was hopeful about Arraez returning to action soon, the manager offered a cautious outlook.
“I’m hopeful that he can play, but we’ll see. We’ll see where it goes.”

Infield Shuffling and Roster Adjustments
When Arraez arrived via the trade deadline, the Phillies reconfigured their defensive alignment to keep his bat in the lineup, moving Bryce Harper to the outfield, Bryson Stott to third base, and Alec Bohm to first, while Arraez took over at second base.
When Arraez exited Thursday’s contest, the team immediately had to adjust on the fly. Stott shifted back to second base, and Edmundo Sosa took over at third base. Mattingly noted that Sosa provides a natural option to play second should Arraez miss extended time, though the club could also revert to its Opening Day infield alignment by moving Harper back to first and inserting outfielders like Derek Hill or Bryan De La Cruz.
The loss to Milwaukee leaves the Phillies at 87-72 with three games remaining in the regular season, holding a two-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final National League wild-card spot as they look to lock down their postseason berth ahead of Tuesday’s Wild Card Series opener.
