The PGA Tour has unveiled comprehensive membership and eligibility rules for its sweeping 2028 competitive restructure, establishing a promotion-and-relegation system, a match-play postseason at the Tour Championship, and a transition pathway through the 2027 season for golf’s top stars.
The PGA Tour released membership categories and qualification standards for its upcoming competitive model, setting the rules that will dictate how players earn their spots in the top-tier Championship Series and the feeder Challenger Series when the changes take effect in 2028, according to reporting from the PGA Tour.
The announcement follows a summer rollout of the structural changes, establishing a 120-player Championship Series featuring purses of at least $20 million across roughly two dozen events.
Transition-Year Eligibility Rules for the 2027 Season
To bridge the gap before the 2028 launch, the tour established transition rules for the 2027 season designed to maintain meritocratic integrity. Players will continue earning exemptions through tournament victories, with winners of THE PLAYERS Championship, major championships, and Signature Events in 2027 securing Championship Series membership through 2029 and Challenger Series membership through 2031, the PGA Tour reported.
Winners of full-field regular season events in 2027 will earn Championship Series membership through 2028 alongside Challenger Series status through 2029. Meanwhile, winners of FedExCup Fall Events and opposite events will secure Challenger Series membership through 2029, Yahoo Sports noted.
Points lists also dictate initial entry. The top 30 players from the 2026 FedExCup points list earned automatic 2028 Championship Series spots, while the top 70 players in the final 2027 FedExCup standings after the Tour Championship will lock in top-tier status for 2028. An additional 95 players will qualify through the 2027 FedExCup Fall Points List.
Promotion, Relegation, and the New Match-Play Tour Championship
Once the system is operational, the bottom tier of the Championship Series will give way to a competitive promotion track. The top 20 players in the 144-man Challenger Series will earn promotion into the Championship Series, alongside any player who wins two Challenger events in a single season, according to the Nytimes.
The season concludes with a reimagined TOUR Championship operating under match-play rules instead of traditional stroke play.

Exemptions for Career Money Leaders and Feeding Pathways
The board approved a one-time safety net for veteran stars.
Additional entry paths extend to developmental circuits. Meanwhile, the No. 1 player in the PGA Tour University ranking will earn an immediate ticket to the Championship Series following the NCAA Championship, with players ranked second through fifth gaining Challenger entry.
Truist Championship and Venue Confirmations
As part of the structural rollout, the Truist Championship was officially confirmed as part of the Championship Series tier in Charlotte, N.C.
Other confirmed stops joining the top tier include The Players Championship, the four majors, the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, the Cadillac Championship at Doral, The Memorial in Ohio, the RBC Heritage, The Travelers Championship, the tournament in Greensboro, and The Sentry at Torrey Pines, according to Yahoo Sports.
