Pallacanestro Cantù opened its domestic basketball campaign with an 85-73 defeat away against Venezia, dropping a 12-point decision that highlighted early-season roster turnover and tactical adjustments under new leadership.
The Biancoblù squad entered the matchup facing an opponent already sharpened by early competitive fixtures, notably reaching the Supercoppa final before falling to Olimpia Milano in overtime. For Cantù, however, this trip served as the first genuine competitive test under newly appointed head coach Frank Vitucci, who took over managerial duties from Walter De Raffaele over the summer alongside new general manager Simone Giofrè.
Early Deficit and Defensive Struggles Shape the Opener
Cantù struggled to find an offensive rhythm early on, conceding an initial deficit that ultimately shaped the trajectory of the game. Despite subsequent efforts to claw back into contention and narrowing the margin at various intervals, Venezia capitalized consistently on defensive lapses.
Reflecting on the match during his post-game press conference, coach Vitucci pointed directly to the opening minutes as a decisive factor. “Certainly the beginning of the match had a significant weight and directed the match,” Vitucci said. “Then we recovered with some effort, also having opportunities to get closer, but Venezia punished our mistakes.”
The visiting coach also highlighted vulnerabilities in individual defense and interior containment. “We suffered too much in the one-on-one and too much in the paint,” Vitucci added. “From an offensive point of view, we wasted too much. We need to work on these aspects quickly, because we expect a performance more adequate to our potential.”
Roster Turnover and the Road Ahead for Cantù
The defeat underscores the transitional nature of Cantù’s current campaign. Following a summer overhaul that saw several key contributors from last season’s survival effort depart, the club assembled a largely redesigned squad tasked with securing safety while establishing an entertaining brand of basketball.
Vitucci remains optimistic that the opening setback will provide necessary instruction for the group as preparations begin for the next fixture. “Let’s hope this match serves as a lesson to us,” Vitucci stated. “Something better was seen, but there are key players who I am sure will be able to do more during the season. We have little time, but we will try to adjust our system in that perspective.”
Pallacanestro Cantù will look to rebound on Monday, Oct. 5, at 20:00 local time, when they host Udine at Paladesio for their next league test.
