Longtime NFL executive Ernie Accorsi, who engineered the core of the New York Giants teams that captured two Super Bowl titles, died Saturday at the age of 84, according to announcements from the franchise and his family. The Giants and Accorsi’s relatives confirmed his passing on Sunday, though they did not provide a specific cause of death or state where he died.
A Transformative Legacy in New York
Accorsi served as the general manager of the Giants from 1998 through 2006. During his tenure, he shaped the roster that secured championship rings following the 2007 and 2011 regular seasons, well after his retirement from day-to-day operations. His impact on the franchise earned him induction into the Giants Ring of Honor, making him the second general manager to receive the distinction.
“Ernie helped shape the course of New York Giants history through his vision, leadership and unwavering belief in building a championship organization,” Giants owner John Mara said in a statement. “Beyond his accomplishments as a football executive, he was a trusted advisor and dear friend.”
The 2004 Draft and the Eli Manning Era
Among Accorsi’s most defining decisions as general manager was orchestrating the acquisition of quarterback Eli Manning during the 2004 NFL draft. After the Chargers selected Manning with the first overall pick, Accorsi worked out a trade to bring the rookie quarterback to New York. The move anchored a competitive stretch that saw the Giants reach the postseason in four out of six seasons between 2005 and 2011.
Manning noted that he still calls Accorsi during draft week every year to thank him for executing the trade and believing in his potential. “I know he was the believer in me and kind of the reason I got here,” Manning said in a statement. “I appreciated him so much for building such great teams and giving us the opportunity to win some championships here.”
Accorsi also hired coach Tom Coughlin, pairing the coach with a talented roster that featured standouts like Michael Strahan, Amani Toomer, and Antonio Pierce. Coughlin remembered his former colleague as a sharp, decisive executive. “Ernie was very decisive, very opinionated,” Coughlin said. “His mind was as sharp as a tack. He loved to laugh. He was a great storyteller.”
A Journey Across Decades in Professional Football
Born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Accorsi earned a communications degree from Wake Forest, served in the U.S. Army, and worked as a sportswriter before moving into public relations roles at Penn State and with the Baltimore Colts. Following a stint at the league office, he returned to the Colts as an assistant general manager before taking over as Baltimore’s GM in 1982. He later served as general manager of the Cleveland Browns from 1985 to 1992 before joining the Giants.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell paid tribute to Accorsi’s extensive career in professional football management. “Ernie Accorsi was one of the most respected football minds in NFL history and a dear friend whose wisdom and perspective I valued tremendously,” Goodell said in a statement. “Throughout his remarkable career, he shaped championship-caliber clubs and earned the admiration of everyone who worked with him.”
Surviving family members shared that the Giants franchise meant a great deal to Accorsi throughout his life, expressing appreciation to the Mara family for their enduring loyalty and friendship.
