The league office did not limit its discipline to the franchise’s bank account. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has been suspended for one year from all league and team activities. In addition, president of business operations Gillian Zucker received a one-year suspension, and president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank was suspended for six months. Kawhi Leonard himself faces a 700.000 dollari fine for his involvement in the circumvention scheme.
“I am deeply disappointed by the flagrant violations of our rules and by the institutional and leadership failures of the Clippers that led to this misconduct,” Silver stated in his official release.
Under the terms of the penalty, the Clippers will forfeit a first-round draft pick every year from 2029 through 2033, limiting the franchise’s long-term asset pool and rebuilding capabilities.
Clippers Vow to Contest League Rulings
The franchise immediately pushed back against the league’s announcement, releasing a formal statement condemning the investigation.
