“He’s a pathetic punching bag,” Diaz said during the promotional event, referencing earlier verbal spars between the two fighters. Diaz added that the buildup surrounding Topuria mirrored the hype that accompanied Conor McGregor when he started to stand out.
The animosity between the two traces back to previous exchanges where Topuria labeled Diaz a “perfect punching bag.” Diaz responded fiercely at the time, and the recent setback against Gaethje gave the veteran an opening to renew his attacks.

Topuria lost his lightweight championship on July 14 after his corner stopped the bout at the conclusion of the fourth round against Gaethje. Medical reports revealed that ‘El Matador’ suffered fractures to his nose, both orbital bones, and his foot during the encounter.
