Munich Selected as Germany’s Candidate for 2036, 2040, or 2044 Olympic Games

Munich stands as Germany’s official candidate for the Olympic and Paralympics Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044, winning a decisive vote against Cologne after months of local referendums and evaluation processes by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).

Munich Secures the National Bid

While the decision marks a major milestone following a two-thirds majority in an October local referendum, city officials and sports leaders now face steep financial, logistical, and historical hurdles on the international stage.

Narrowing Down the National Field

The path to the German nomination saw earlier contenders fall away from the national race. Hamburg withdrew after local residents rejected a bid at the ballot box, while Berlin pulled out following a local election victory by the Left party and a third-place ranking in the national evaluation process.

That left Munich and Cologne facing off for the nomination. Munich secured a 91-to-50 vote advantage in the final selection process at the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden.

Infrastructure and Local Hurdles

The city’s bid centers heavily on its existing infrastructure. It is anchored by the iconic 1972 Olympic Stadium and plans for an Olympic festival zone modeled after local cultural traditions.

Yet, the victory brings immediate burdens. City planners must manage complex property rights, zoning regulations, and climbing construction costs while keeping up with global expectations.

Understanding a Complex History

Beyond local logistics, the bid carries a sensitive historical weight. Selection for the 2036 Games would coincide with the centenary of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, an event infamously exploited for Nazi propaganda.

Because of this delicate proximity, some voices within the DOSB favor targeting the 2040 Games instead to distance the modern event from historical shadows.

Global Competition Awaits

The international competition remains wide open. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will not begin shortlisting candidate cities until 2027, and a European host region is not guaranteed.

Munich faces intense global competition from potential bids in India, Qatar, other European nations, and prospective African contenders.
