Munich has seized the top position in the race to become Germany’s official candidate city for the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games, pulling ahead in an exhaustive evaluation by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).
Public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk reported that an expert evaluation commission placed Munich at the summit of the scoring list. The Bavarian capital holds a narrow advantage over the regional concept of Köln and the Rhein-Ruhr area, while Berlin trails considerably behind as an outsider.
The commission’s findings mark a crucial turning point ahead of a decisive vote scheduled for Saturday in Baden-Baden. Sports leaders and federation representatives will gather there to select the single applicant city to take forward into the international contest against global rivals including India, Qatar, and Turkey.
The DOSB Commission Scrutinizes Three Competing Bids
According to the DOSB evaluation report cited by Deutschlandfunk, Munich and the Köln/Rhein-Ruhr joint bid both earned top marks with a “very good” rating. Berlin received a lower “good” evaluation.
Reviewers noted that all three submitted concepts are fundamentally capable of hosting the massive multi-sport event. Yet, sharp differences emerged in planning stability and public backing.
Berlin Slips on Structural Stability and Lacking Referendums
Berlin’s bid leaned heavily on the capital’s international prestige and global cultural footprint. However, the evaluation panel pointed out that Berlin lost substantial ground on structural stability metrics.
Crucially, Berlin opted against holding a public referendum. By contrast, both Munich and the Rhein-Ruhr project benefited from successful, broad-based citizen referendums that proved vital to their overall evaluation scores.
Munich Secures the Most Balanced Package
Reviewers characterized Munich’s bid as the most balanced package overall, combining meticulous venue layouts with robust regional consensus.
Köln/Rhein-Ruhr and Berlin have designated Rostock-Warnemünde as their prospective sailing venue, while Munich’s blueprint places the sailing competitions on the waters of Kiel.
Delegates Gather for the Baden-Baden Showdown
The evaluation committee’s vote serves as a major strategic orientation for the upcoming selection process, though it is not legally binding for the delegates casting ballots.
The final decision rests with the leadership of the Olympic top sports federations, the DOSB executive committee, and personal members gathering this Saturday.
Once the domestic winner is chosen in Baden-Baden, that city will officially enter the international arena, squaring off against foreign contenders aiming to secure hosting rights for future Summer Games.
