Munich has officially stepped forward as Germany’s candidate to host the Summer Olympic Games, releasing a detailed venue concept targeting the editions in 2036, 2040, or 2044. According to municipal planning documents, the bid uses both historic landmarks and established athletic hubs across the city, the surrounding Munich region, and outlying Bavarian centers to distribute events.
Urban Venues Across Munich
The core of the proposed Olympic footprint centers on the historic Olympiapark. Planners designated the park for a wide array of disciplines, including 3×3 basketball, standard basketball, BMX, football, artistic gymnastics, handball, synchronized swimming, track and field, modern pentathlon, skateboarding, sport climbing, table tennis, trampoline, triathlon, water polo, and diving. Track cycling is also slated for the Olympiapark, though organizers noted Nuremberg remains an alternative option for the cycling discipline.
Several other iconic Munich locations form part of the municipal blueprint. The Theresienwiese is earmarked for beach volleyball, while Schloss Nymphenburg and the Englischer Garten are designated to host equestrian events. Indoor sports find homes at established facilities, with the BMW Park slated for badminton and rhythmic gymnastics, and the MTTC Iphitos grounds designated for tennis. Football fixtures would utilize the Allianz Arena, which is also listed for rugby, alongside the historic Grünwalder Stadion.
Additional city-center locations include the Odeonsplatz as the finish line for road cycling, the Reitanlage Riem for further equestrian competitions, and the Messe München exhibition center, which would host combat and indoor sports such as boxing, fencing, weightlifting, judo, wrestling, taekwondo, and volleyball. As potential supplemental sports, Munich’s concept lists baseball, flag football, and lacrosse at the Olympiapark, cricket at Riem, and squash at the Paketposthalle.
Regional Hubs in the Munich Umland
Beyond the city limits, the Munich metropolitan region takes on several technical and outdoor disciplines. Oberschleißheim is mapped out for archery, canoe sprint, and rowing. Eichenried serves as the designated venue for golf, Unterhaching takes on field hockey, Garching handles shooting sports, and Munich Airport is designated to host swimming events.
Outlying Bavarian Venues
The broader Bavarian region and neighboring states complete the decentralized infrastructure. Open-water swimming is assigned to the Starnberger See, while mountain biking is scheduled for Bad Wiessee. Augsburg is designated for canoe slalom and football matches. Football preliminaries and matches are also distributed across stadiums in Nuremberg, Ingolstadt, and Stuttgart. Further afield, Kiel is slated to host the sailing competitions.
