During his difficult final season with the Florida Panthers in 2019-2020, Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson seriously considered walking away from the National Hockey League entirely after losing all confidence on the ice, according to interviews he shared with Agence QMI.
Matheson spent the entirety of his early professional career with the Panthers after arriving in the NHL in 2016. However, the 2019-2020 campaign proved to be a major turning point for the defenseman, both professionally and personally. At just 26 years old, his average ice time dropped significantly from 22 minutes per game down to 18 minutes. The reduction in role coincided with a steep decline in his overall well-being.
Overcoming a Loss of Confidence in Florida
Reflecting on his final months in Sunrise, Matheson offered a candid assessment of his mindset at the time. He admitted that the persistent struggles on the ice began bleeding into his everyday life, affecting his relationships and his enthusiasm for the game.

Fatherhood and Changing Perspectives
The transformation away from the rink continued when Matheson and his wife welcomed their first child a year into his time with Pittsburgh. According to the veteran defenseman, fatherhood completely shifted his priorities and how he processed the ups and downs of a professional hockey season.
