While his exact title remains unannounced, sources familiar with the team’s thinking note that he is expected to hold a significant role in the club’s decision-making process.
Reuniting a Cleveland Front-Office Pipeline
The impending hire reconnects Falvey with Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns. The pair previously worked alongside each other in Cleveland’s front office as co-directors of baseball operations from 2011 to 2012 before Stearns moved on to an assistant GM role with the Astros.

Falvey stayed in Cleveland, becoming an assistant GM in Cleveland before taking on the top decision-making role in Minnesota. According to league reports, Falvey will not serve as general manager under president of baseball operations David Stearns, one source said, but instead in a different executive role. The Mets currently have three assistant GMs in Eduardo Brizuela, Jonathan Strangio and Ben Zauzmer, as well as two special assistants to baseball operations in Carlos Beltrán and J.D. Martinez.
“I know David supports that, and I’m looking forward to when we make those decisions, to announcing them,” Cohen said. “It doesn’t have to be a GM. It could be other ways to support David and the front office. I think the whole point is getting more opinions in the front office, and people who are either pretty good at evaluating talent or people who have been in those positions before in the front office, in a high position in a front office, and help David out and help the team out as far as getting different points of view.”

A Decade in Minnesota and an Unexpected Departure
Falvey brings nearly a decade of top-level experience to New York. Hired in October 2016 as the Twins’ executive vice president and chief baseball officer, Falvey worked in tandem with general manager Thad Levine for many years, helping lead Minnesota to playoff appearances in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2023. Under his leadership, the Twins famously snapped their lengthy playoff losing streak in 2023, beating the Blue Jays twice in a row to advance past the AL wild card round.

His tenure in Minnesota also featured notable successes and friction. Falvey made some great moves during the Falvey era, like signing Nelson Cruz in 2019. He left the organization prior to this season, with GM Jeremy Zoll taking over as the head of baseball operations.
Reporting indicates that Falvey unexpectedly departed the Twins organization in January. The sides described the split as a mutual parting of ways. Further reporting detailed a difference in opinion between Falvey and executive chair Tom Pohlad. The team seemed headed toward a rebuild after a mass selloff at the 2025 trade deadline, but Pohlad was outspoken about competing in 2026 heading into the campaign. The out-of-nowhere departure for Falvey was the latest move in a tumultuous stretch for the organizational structure. After the 2024 season, general manager Thad Levine stepped down. Former chairman Joe Pohlad began exploring a sale of the franchise. President and CEO Dave St. Peter stepped down.
Offseason Priorities for the Mets
As the Mets wrap up the final stretch of their season—after going 89-73 and making a surprise run to the National League Championship Series in Stearns’ first season in 2024, the Mets have taken steps backward in each of the next two seasons. Last year, the team finished 83-79, missing out on the playoffs on the final day of the regular season—the front office faces critical roster decisions. With the team falling short of expectations, the incoming leadership team will be tasked with sorting out the roster and bolstering a player evaluation pipeline as New York looks to rebound next spring.
