Matthew Brennan secured his fourth victory at the Vuelta a España on stage 16, crossing the finish line first in La Rábida (Palos de la Frontera) after a flat, tactical stage where Enric Mas successfully defended the red jersey, according to race reports.
The 21-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike rider navigated the 181.1-kilometer run from Cortegana to La Rábida in 3 hours, 56 minutes, and 33 seconds, achieving an average speed of 45.9 kilometers per hour, as documented by race coverage. Brennan surged past his competitors in the final meters of a completely flat run, overpowering the bunch finish with the support of teammate Wout van Aert. Bryan Coquard of Cofidis finished second, while Vito Braet of Lotto took third place.
Sprint Dominance and Team Visma’s Run
Brennan’s latest triumph marks his fourth stage win of the race, continuing a dominant Grand Tour debut for the young British sprinter. With van Aert operating as a key lead-out rider, the duo has anchored a total of six victories for Visma-Lease a Bike during the competition, according to race documentation.
“It’s incredible,” Brennan said, reflecting on his run. “I arrived with the goal of winning a stage and I have four. I would like to be at the Tour next year, which starts in Great Britain, and be able to do something similar.”
The stage itself unfolded in the historical setting of La Rábida in Palos de la Frontera, the departure point for Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the Indies. Despite moments of tactical tension driven by crosswinds, the peloton kept a tight grip on breakaway attempts, ensuring another bunch sprint.
General Classification Remains Unshaken
At the top of the overall standings, Enric Mas of the Movistar Team completed a controlled stage to preserve his lead, logging his eighth day in the race leader’s red jersey. Mas holds a 2-minute and 6-second advantage over Felix Gall of Decathlon CMA CGM, with Primož Roglič sitting third at 2 minutes and 10 seconds behind, according to official classification updates.
“Another day that I’ve overcome, there are 5 left,” Mas stated after the stage. “There were moments of tension because of the wind, but it didn’t blow hard. Yesterday there was calm on the rest day, and when you relax then you notice it.”
With the overall standings unchanged, the focus shifts directly toward the individual time trial in Jerez, which serves as a pivotal test for the contenders fighting for podium positions.
What Lies Ahead in Stage 17
The race continues with the 17th stage, a 185-kilometer route stretching from Dos Hermanas to Seville. Featuring a completely flat profile with just 1,084 meters of accumulated elevation gain and no major orographic difficulties, the stage profile heavily favors another mass sprint finish. Sprinters’ teams are expected to control the breakaway from the opening kilometers, setting the stage for another high-speed showdown in southern Spain.
