Mertlová revealed that she previously had a knee cyst extracted, only for the condition to return. Beyond the recurrent cyst, she reported indications of a torn meniscus.

Despite experiencing a persistent pressure rather than acute pain during activities such as yoga—noting she could potentially live with the joint condition for another six months to a year—her physician advised against waiting. According to her statements in the video, the doctor emphasized that the knee condition will deteriorate over time, making an immediate medical intervention the safer path forward.

Surgical Options and Recovery Timeline Scenarios

Medical evaluations have presented two distinct possibilities for the operation. The first involves a standard knee arthroscopy, which carries an estimated recovery period of approximately one month. However, diagnostic uncertainties remain regarding additional internal joint damage that may only become visible once the surgical camera is deployed inside the knee.

If more extensive internal repairs are required during the procedure, the subsequent rehabilitation period would extend to four months. Such a timeline introduces logistical hurdles for the household, particularly with the start of the professional hockey season approaching for Nečas, who plays as a forward for the Colorado Avalanche following his engagement to Mertlová in June during a trip to Hawaii.

The prospect of a prolonged recovery creates immediate daily challenges. Mertlová noted that a four-month rehabilitation would likely leave her on crutches for at least a month, unable to climb stairs independently, and requiring dedicated home assistance.
