The Liga Superior de Baloncesto Venezolano officially launched on Friday, September 25, bringing 10 teams and more than 150 players to the court to compete for the inaugural Copa Venezuela Renace. Venezuelan president Delcy Rodríguez announced the start of the tournament through her official Telegram channel alongside Youth and Sports officials, framing the new circuit as an opportunity to maintain competitive play year-round.
Tournament Structure and Regional Divisions
The newly formed Liga Superior de Baloncesto operates as a direct complement to the Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto (SPB), which traditionally runs during the first half of the year. Minister of Sport Franklin Cardillo confirmed that the inaugural tournament spans from September to December, providing an expanded calendar for domestic athletes.
The 10 participating franchises are split evenly into two regional groups for the regular season:
- Conferencia Central: Cocodrilos de Caracas, Trotamundos de Carabobo, Pioneros del Ávila, Gaiteros del Zulia, and Costaneros de Puerto Cabello.
- Conferencia Oriental: Guaiqueríes de Margarita, Marinos de Anzoátegui, Piratas de La Guaira, Spartans de Distrito Capital, and Hidrocarburos de Caracas.
Each club plays 26 games during the regular-season schedule—consisting of 16 intra-conference matchups and 10 inter-conference contests—totaling 130 games overall. The top two teams from each conference advance to the five-game series playoff rounds, culminating in a best-of-five final series to decide the champion.
Focus on Youth Development and Local Roster Rules
League organizers structured the competition around a 100% Venezuelan player base, creating dedicated roster spots for athletes in the Under-21 and Under-23 categories. According to the Federación Venezolana de Baloncesto (FVB), 13 players who represented Venezuela in the FIBA U23 3×3 World Cup or youth category tournaments since 2022 have signed with participating clubs.
Several clubs integrated these young prospects directly into their opening rosters. Cocodrilos de Caracas added Jordy Aponte, Rubén González, and Anderson Sosa, while Marinos de Anzoátegui signed Ricardo Villarroel. Piratas de La Guaira incorporated José Lara and Edward Guaramato, and Spartans Distrito Capital brought in Yderick González, Diego Aponte, and Pablo Jordan. Meanwhile, Trotamundos de Carabobo added Diego Sulbarán, Anthony Reyes, Enzo Nash, and Carlos Tovar.
Opening Night and Charitable Initiative
The opening fixture took place at 7:00 p.m. local time on Friday, September 25, at the Parque Naciones Unidas in Caracas, featuring a matchup between Cocodrilos de Caracas and Trotamundos de Carabobo. Ministry officials announced that ticket sales and proceeds generated during the Copa Venezuela Renace will be directed toward supporting families impacted by the double seismic event recorded on June 24.
The initiative itself traces back to discussions between national leadership and veteran players, including Gregory Vargas, who initially proposed the creation of an extended professional window to national authorities. Federation officials and government ministry representatives noted that the league aims to deepen talent development pipelines ahead of future international windows.
