Red Bull Racing team principal Laurent Mekies has revealed that Max Verstappen faced motor issues during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend, narrowly missing out on his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season on the Baku City Circuit. Verstappen fought back from an eighth-place grid slot on Sunday to finish second, just two tenths of a second behind race winner George Russell.
Power-Unit Hurdles Upended Verstappen’s Friday Qualifying
The four-time world champion encountered severe technical hurdles with his Red Bull Powertrains engine during Friday qualifying on the Baku street circuit. Those mechanical setbacks forced the Dutchman to start down in eighth place, leaving his chances of contending for the race win looking remote before lights out. Mekies explained that the team discovered two separate power-unit faults that drained valuable performance on Friday.
“We had to deal with two different problems around the engine,” Mekies said after the race in Baku. “That cost us a lot on Friday, but it’s not otherwise. That’s just part of it. Honestly, Max has been incredibly strong since Friday, and without the engine problems, he probably would have fought for the front row or even more.”
Red Bull Powertrains Swapped Out the Power Unit on Saturday
Seeking a solution ahead of the weekend's critical sessions, Red Bull mechanics fitted a fresh power unit into Verstappen’s car on Saturday morning. The hardware change immediately restored the car’s straight-line speed, enabling the reigning champion to post very high top speeds through the final sector of the track. Mekies praised the dedication and execution of the entire Red Bull Powertrains department in Milton Keynes.
“By solving the problems with a new engine, we were fortunately able to return to the competitive level we had hoped for,” Mekies noted, acknowledging the pride within the engine division. Without the early technical setbacks, team leadership believes Verstappen would have been a firm fixture at the front of the grid.
Managing the Narrow Operating Window of the RB22 Power Unit
Detailing the nuances of the new era of regulations, Mekies highlighted that the Red Bull power unit possesses immense potential but operates within a remarkably narrow performance window. Much like the RB22 chassis, the power plant requires precise management to maintain peak reliability and pace for both Verstappen and teammate Isack Hadjar.
“As we’ve said a few times before, we have a fantastic engine,” Mekies stated. “We just have a fairly narrow range in which it performs optimally. It takes an enormous amount of energy from everyone, both in Milton Keynes and at the circuit, to keep it within that ideal range.”
Mekies emphasized that the fine-tuning of energy deployment, power delivery, and tactical usage remains a constant daily objective for the engineering crew, noting that high volumes of radio communication during race weekends reflect those complex calibration efforts.
