France captain Kylian Mbappé offered a blunt assessment of his squad’s performance following a 2-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup semifinals, stating that Les Bleus simply failed to deliver the standard required at that stage of the tournament. Speaking to broadcaster M6 following the match near Dallas, the Real Madrid forward pointed to tactical and technical shortcomings as key factors in the elimination.

He added that failing to execute fundamental game plans in a World Cup semifinal naturally results in a loss.
The French captain acknowledged that there was “an enormous amount of disappointment” within the camp. He noted that Les Bleus committed “too many technical approximations” against the Spanish press, preventing them from applying pressure when openings arose.
Tactical Mismatch and Midfield Control
The tactical battle dictated much of the semifinal narrative. France entered the fixture with a clear directive to press high up the pitch, intending to disrupt Spain’s rhythm and prevent them from settling into a comfortable passing game. However, Mbappé admitted that the execution fell short of the objective.
