Italy Shines at Yankton Field Archery World Championships
Italy’s national archery team secured an early world title and positioned multiple athletes for gold and bronze medals during the individual eliminations at the Field Archery World Championships in Yankton, South Dakota. The mixed team junior duo of Linda Grezzani and Giulio Locchi claimed the first gold medal of the tournament for the Azzurri by defeating the United States 69-62 in the final round.
Junior and Senior Divisions Advance to Medal Rounds
Unlike traditional target archery on flat stadium fields, field archery requires competitors to move through natural wooded courses and changing elevations while estimating unknown or variable target distances under shifting natural light.
In the junior divisions, Linda Grezzani earned a spot in the barebow gold medal match after defeating Australia’s Yee 42-38, setting up a clash against American archer Crandall. Jacopo Azzoni advanced to the recurve junior gold medal match following three consecutive victories over France’s Laforgue (84-82), Israel’s Mor (86-81), and Mexico’s Mendez (48-42). Emma Di Vita joined them in the recurve junior final by overcoming Canada’s Langley (86-63), the Czech Republic’s Tovarnicka (79-64), and Germany’s Janke (55-53). In the compound junior category, Fabrizio Aloisi booked his place in the gold medal match against the United States competitor Kane after wins against New Zealand’s Mcneilly (69-57), Australia’s Turner (104-101), and Sweden’s Johnsson (98-88).
Semifinalists and Bronze Contenders Secure Positions
Senior competitors Roberta Di Francesco, Eleonora Strobbe, and Giuseppe Seimandi secured crucial semifinal berths in their respective disciplines. Di Francesco advanced in the senior recurve bracket where she is scheduled to face American archer Kaufhold, having previously eliminated Romania’s Amaistroaie (94-83) and Germany’s Herrmann (87-78). Strobbe advanced in the senior barebow division to face Australia’s Fairweather following victories over Austria’s Payer (79-68) and Australia’s Fryz (86-73). Seimandi also advanced in senior barebow after defeating Australia’s Gooding (81-73) and the United States’ Davis (84-79), setting up a semifinal match against Sweden’s Petterson.
Additional Italian athletes advanced to bronze medal matches. In the junior barebow class, Giulio Locchi will face American archer Olmstead for the bronze after defeating the United States’ Urgelles (55-48) and dropping a match to Sweden’s Rohlin (52-43). In the junior compound division, Giorgia Montaldi reached the bronze medal playoff against Germany’s Dorfner after defeating Australia’s Griffiths (98-82) and the United States’ Markle (95-94), before falling in her semifinal to American archer Cook (63-61).
Recurve, Compound, and Team Developments
Other members of the Italian squad concluded their individual campaigns during the intense elimination brackets. In senior recurve, Chiara Rebagliati defeated Spain’s De La Fuente Torrecilla (91-83) before falling to France’s Machinet (81-80). Federico Musolesi reached the men’s recurve quarterfinals with a 96-86 win over Australia’s Smith, before losing 102-91 to Israel’s Dror, while teammates Matteo Borsani and Massimiliano Mandia exited in the round of 16 against Israel’s Shanny and Germany’s Hetz respectively (91-93). In the senior compound division, Marco Bruno advanced past France’s Girard via a shoot-off (102-102, 5-4) before bowing out in the quarterfinals to American archer Carter (106-99). Marco Morello, Michea Godano, Sara Ret, Andrea Nicole Moccia, and Giulia Di Nardo all exited in the round of 16 following tight matches against international opponents.
Team competition continues alongside the individual playoffs. The Italian men’s team featuring Simone Barbieri, Matteo Borsani, and Michea Godano defeated Spain to advance to a semifinal matchup against France. The women’s team comprising Eleonora Strobbe, Giulia Di Nardo, and Roberta Di Francesco overcame Japan to book a semifinal showdown against Germany.
