FC Girondins de Bordeaux has been sold to the British investment fund Park Bench for a symbolic fee of one euro, completing a dramatic financial restructuring designed to save the historic French club from liquidation. The transaction closes a turbulent era under current owner Gérard Lopez and drops the six-time Ligue 1 champions into a precarious rebuilding phase.
From European Contender to Sixth-Tier Reality
The sale marks a staggering descent for an institution that once featured French icon Zinedine Zidane during its run to the 1996 UEFA Cup final. Under Lopez, who took control of the club in 2021 while it still competed in Ligue 1, mounting financial distress and successive sporting relegations pushed Girondins down to Regional 1, the sixth tier of French football.

Over the summer, the National Directorate of Management Control and the French Football Federation ratified severe sporting sanctions tied to the club’s balance sheet. Stripped of its professional status, Bordeaux faced the immediate threat of complete judicial liquidation before the commercial court of Bordeaux intervened to demand a viable continuity plan.
Debt Restructuring and the Park Bench Agreement
While the purchase price is set at a single euro, the acquisition requires the incoming British fund to absorb the club’s remaining liabilities. According to financial disclosures, the restructuring process successfully halved Bordeaux’s overall debt from approximately 26 millones de euros down to roughly 13 millones, while extending the repayment timeline from 10 to 12 years.

As part of the preliminary agreement, Gérard Lopez renounced all outstanding shareholder loans he held against Girondins, relinquishing any future right to recover those funds. Negotiations with Park Bench—led by businessman James Bord, who also holds investments in Spanish club Córdoba—hit turbulence and briefly collapsed in early September before reviving around revised debt write-offs, public liability adjustments, and a settlement covering a labor dispute with former manager Vladimir Petkovic.
Regulatory Hurdles and Next Checkpoints
Despite the signing of the acquisition agreement announced by the club on September 30, 2026, the transition remains subject to critical legal and sporting approvals. Park Bench representatives must appear before the Regional Control Management Commission of the New Aquitaine Football League to present a verified operating budget and economic plan for the 2026–27 season. Concurrently, the Bordeaux commercial court must formally homologate the continuity plan before the club can officially cement its new operational chapter.
