The New York Giants secured veteran quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year contract extension worth $13 million on Sunday, locking the 32-year-old signal-caller through the 2028 season ahead of their regular-season opener, according to reports confirmed by multiple league sources.
Securing the Quarterback Room Behind Jaxson Dart
The front office finalized the two-year agreement over the final weekend before the season, pairing Winston with second-year starter Jaxson Dart for the foreseeable future. Winston arrived in New York in 2025 on an initial two-year, $8 million contract worth up to $16 million with incentives, offering stability to a room that previously saw pursuits of veteran quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers leave only Tommy DeVito on the roster. Last season, Winston appeared in three games, completing 37 of 66 passes for 567 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions while making a pair of starts in November when Dart was sidelined by injury.
Salary Cap Relief and Roster Management
Entering Sunday, the Giants sat approximately $1.18 million over the salary cap according to Over the Cap data. With Winston’s previous base salary slated at $3.95 million for the upcoming season, the restructured multi-year arrangement helps the organization navigate its cap constraints just days before kickoff.
Leadership and Mentorship Roles Under Head Coach John Harbaugh
Winston’s value to the franchise extends beyond emergency play on the field. Under new head coach John Harbaugh, Winston was voted by teammates as one of eight players on the team leadership group. During training camp and throughout the preseason, the former No. 1 overall pick out of Florida State has served as a primary mentor for Dart, helping the young quarterback decode complex offensive systems.
“It’s fun seeing him just — again, just master what they’re throwing at him,” Winston said of Dart during training camp last month. “Because it’s a lot because of the complexities of the different systems and him having to learn all those systems in one and ultimately creating a system that benefits him as a player.”
Offensive Line Stability and Next Steps
In addition to Winston’s extension, the Giants also agreed to a two-year extension with guard Jon Runyan worth $22 million with $21.5 million guaranteed, keeping the offensive lineman in New York through 2028.
