German Olympic judoka Timo Cavelius suffered a broken jaw and lost two teeth following a physical assault by Georgian guest fighter Akaki Japaridze at the conclusion of a Judo-Bundesliga team match in Leipzig, according to regional and national reports confirmed by the German Judo Federation (DJB).
What Happened on the Mat in Leipzig
With the host team’s 8:6 victory already decided, 24-year-old guest competitor Akaki Japaridze of Georgia faced 29-year-old German Olympian Timo Cavelius of TSV Abensberg in the 90-kilogram weight class, marking their second meeting within an hour after Japaridze won their initial bout.
The underlegene Georgian fighter rushed the unsuspecting Cavelius and struck him three times with closed fists to the face.
“Dem Georgier sind die Sicherungen durchgebrannt,” said TSV Abensberg coach Manuel Scheibel in comments reported by the Leipziger Volkszeitung and 20min.ch. “Das ist ein schrecklicher Einzelfall und hat nichts mit Leipzig und Abensberg zu tun – unsere Vereine verstehen sich gut.”
Immediate Medical Response and Injuries
Cavelius sustained severe facial trauma, including a broken jaw and the loss of two teeth, according to local news reports. Emergency responders transported him to the Universitätsklinik Leipzig, where surgeons operated on him on Saturday evening.
Following the altercation, Japaridze reportedly left the venue and returned to his hotel before preparing to travel back to Georgia.
Official Disciplinary Actions and Club Responses
The German Judo Federation (DJB) condemned the assault and announced plans for a comprehensive review of the incident. In an official statement provided to media outlets, DJB Head of High-Performance Sport Miryam Roper emphasized the foundational trust of combat sports.
“Dieses Vertrauen ist die Grundlage unseres Sports. Diese Tat hat nicht nur Timo schwer verletzt, sie trifft jede und jeden von uns, die wir Judo machen.”
The DJB confirmed that local police authorities were immediately called to the venue and have opened an investigation. In addition to criminal inquiries, the national governing body is evaluating all sports-legal and regular legal sanctions against the perpetrator.
JC Leipzig released a public statement via Instagram distancing the organization from the violence: “Gewalt hat in unserem Sport keinen Platz. Als Judoka stehen wir für Respekt, Toleranz, Fairness und gegenseitige Achtung.”
JCL club captain Hannes Conrad expressed shock over the escalation, noting in regional coverage that Japaridze had behaved quietly and inconspicuously since joining the Bundesliga roster at the start of the season, during which he made only two team appearances.
Potential Consequences for Japaridze and JC Leipzig
International judo authorities are weighing severe sanctions. Simultaneously, the JC Leipzig club faces potential financial penalties from the league administration for the security failure.
Despite the severity of the brawl, team officials from both clubs supported the decision not to abandon the team competition, allowing the remaining matches of the fixture to reach a formal conclusion under tournament regulations. Both coaching staffs stressed that the violent outburst was an isolated aberration that does not reflect the otherwise amicable athletic relationship between JC Leipzig and TSV Abensberg.
