George Russell secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after dominating Friday’s qualifying session on the Baku street circuit. The Mercedes driver clocked a fast lap of 1 minute, 42.526 seconds across the 6.003-kilometer layout, edging out Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 837 milliseconds to claim his fifth pole of the season and the twelfth of his Formula 1 career.
Friday’s qualifying hour on the fourth-longest track of the world championship grid established the starting grid for Saturday’s 51-lap race. While Russell capitalized on his machinery’s speed in the Azerbaijani capital, his teammate and championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli suffered a major setback during the opening minutes of the session.
How Russell and Leclerc Claimed the Front Row
Russell delivered a commanding performance through the decisive third qualifying round (Q3), leaving the rest of the field scrambling to match his pace on the twisty and punishing Baku layout. Leclerc managed to extract maximum speed from his Ferrari during the final shootout, slotting into second place alongside the British driver to lock out the front row of the grid.
Behind them, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri secured third place, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar claimed fourth to round out the second row. The third row features reigning title holder Lando Norris of McLaren paired alongside seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari.
Antonelli’s Suspension Failure and Mid-Grid Shakeup
The afternoon took a dramatic turn for championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian driver, who entered the weekend holding an 81-point advantage over his teammate in the standings, suffered a broken front-left suspension during the opening phase of qualifying. The damage prevented him from advancing to Q2, leaving him stranded in 16th place for Saturday’s start.
Further down the grid, Carlos Sainz qualified ninth for Williams, though records show the Spanish driver faces a post-session investigation regarding a potential irregularity under yellow flag conditions. Sainz will line up one position ahead of Alpine driver Franco Colapinto.
Completing the top ten and the surrounding positions, Pierre Gasly starts seventh for Alpine alongside four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull in eighth. Veteran driver Fernando Alonso faces an uphill battle from the 19th position on the grid.
