Tragic Death in China

Boupendza was found dead on Wednesday in Zhejiang, China, where he resided and played professionally. According to reports from international media outlets, the player reportedly died following a fall from the 11th floor of an apartment building. Local authorities in China have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy, leaving all potential hypotheses open, including accident, suicide, or foul play.

The athlete had recently transferred to Chinese club Zhejiang Professional in January 2025 for a reported fee of 800,000 euros, following a stint with Romanian side Rapid Bucarest. Prior to the tragic discovery, Boupendza had reportedly missed a recent team training session, though club leadership had not been alerted to any personal difficulties beforehand.

Born in Gabon, Boupendza developed his early skills at CF Mounana before breaking out internationally during the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2016). His early potential caught the attention of French scouts, leading to a transfer to Girondins de Bordeaux at age 20. Although he struggled to establish a permanent first-team place at Bordeaux—undergoing multiple loan spells with Pau, Gazélec Ajaccio, Tours, and Feirense—he found prolific form during a standout loan at Pau in National 1, scoring 13 goals during the 2017–2018 campaign.

His career reached new heights in Turkey with Hatayspor during the 2020–2021 Süper Lig season, where he netted 22 goals to finish as the league’s top scorer. That stellar campaign propelled him into lucrative spells in the Persian Gulf with Al-Arabi and Al-Shabab, followed by a move to Major League Soccer with FC Cincinnati, where he tallied 9 goals in 35 appearances through 2023. After a brief return to European football with Rapid Bucarest in the summer of 2024, he completed his final transfer to the Chinese Super League at the start of 2025.

International Legacy with the Panthères

On the international stage, Boupendza earned 35 caps and scored 8 goals for the Gabon national team, establishing himself as a core attacking presence alongside marquee teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
