Flamengo has secured the signing of 16-year-old center-back Matheus Garay on a loan deal with an option to purchase, reinforcing the club’s under-17 academy ranks. The young defender arrives from Sfera on an 18-month agreement, according to regional sports reports.
Contract Terms and Academy Integration
Garay steps into the under-17 setup at Flamengo under an arrangement that links him to the Rio de Janeiro club for a year and a half. At the conclusion of this loan spell, Flamengo holds a permanent purchase option to secure the left-footed defender outright.
Standing at 1.88 meters (approximately 6 feet 2 inches), Garay brings size and a left-footed profile to the backline. Sfera has overseen his development since 2021, when he initially joined their under-13 side.
Developmental Milestones at Sfera
During his time within Sfera’s youth system, Garay earned leadership responsibilities. He captained the under-15 squad during a run to the quarterfinals of the Campeonato Paulista for that age group.

His progression continued into the current year, where he featured in the Copa do Brasil Sub-17. In that national competition, Sfera advanced past Grêmio before bowing out to Athletico-PR. Garay also logged minutes in the Paulista Sub-17 tournament, helping anchor a squad that captured the lead in its group during the second phase. Across all competitions this season, he has recorded 14 appearances and one goal.
Project Blueprint and International Reach
Founded in 2021, Sfera operates primarily as a talent incubator dedicated to developing and transferring young prospects into international football markets. The project has previously placed academy graduates with clubs across the United States, Mexico, England, and Portugal.
