Fenerbahçe has successfully reduced Matteo Guendouzi’s UEFA suspension following an appeal to the UEFA Appeals Body, clearing the French midfielder to face Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League. The club announced that the initial four-match ban has been cut to three matches, with two of those remaining matches suspended under a one-year probationary period.
The disciplinary proceedings stem from the aftermath of Fenerbahçe’s 2–1 away victory against Olympique Lyonnais on August 26, a result that secured the Turkish side’s return to the Champions League group stage after an 18-year absence. Following the match, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body opened a case against Guendouzi, citing insults directed at individuals present at the venue, spectator provocation, and violations of basic rules of decent conduct. Alongside the four-match ban, the player was hit with a 50,000 euro fine, with two matches of the suspension initially subjected to a one-year probation.
The Revised Suspension and Impact on European Fixtures
Under the initial ruling, Guendouzi was slated to miss both of Fenerbahçe’s opening league-stage fixtures against Roma and Aston Villa. The 27-year-old midfielder served the first portion of his penalty on September 10, sitting out the match against Roma—a fixture that ended in a 1–1 draw under manager İsmail Kartal, who deployed Bartuğ Elmaz in the Frenchman’s absence.
Fenerbahçe immediately lodged an appeal with the UEFA Appeals Body challenging the severity of the sanction. The successful legal challenge removed the second outright match ban, converting the punishment into a three-match total sentence where two games remain suspended conditionally over a 12-month period. Because he already served his time against Roma, the adjustment clears Guendouzi to return to continental competition.

With the suspension effectively satisfied for the immediate future, Guendouzi is available for selection when Fenerbahçe travels to face Aston Villa on October 14.
