A press conference featuring manager Heimir Hallgrímsson and a player, initially set for a Saturday morning slot, was pushed back after the team held internal discussions regarding the matches. Courell addressed reporters following the delay, explaining the sequence of events that led up to the vote.
“This morning, a player communicated his discomfort to the head coach and his intention to withdraw from the squad,” Courell said. “This new situation required time and consideration from the team. Ultimately, over the last 90 minutes, we conducted a team vote on whether the fixtures should go ahead. The result was a clear majority for playing. The association has taken the decision to fulfill these fixtures.”
Minimizing Damage on and off the Pitch
Manager Heimir Hallgrímsson acknowledged the difficult environment surrounding the team.
“At the moment, nobody feels comfortable,” Hallgrímsson said. “It’s about minimizing the damage for each individual and for Irish football, and we have to find a solution for that. There is no measure that everyone would agree on.”
Prior to the team vote, the fixtures drew widespread public discussion and a public letter signed by more than 160 Irish athletes. The signatories, including Olympian Ciara Mageean, former international player Louise Quinn, and rugby figure Tony Ward, called on the national team to bypass the matches.
Neutral Venues and Strict Security

Rather than playing in the home countries of either team, the fixtures were scheduled entirely on neutral soil. The first match was set for September 27, 2024, in Debrecen, Hungary, with the return fixture scheduled for October 4, 2024, in Bačka Topola, Serbia, behind closed doors.
