He similarly downplayed friction with former general manager Steve Yzerman, despite past frustration surrounding the March 2023 trade of close friend Tyler Bertuzzi and public critiques following the 2025 trade deadline.

Loss of the Captaincy and Training Camp Injury Complications
The fallout from the trade request cost Larkin the ‘C’ he had worn since January 2021, when Yzerman originally appointed him captain. Last week, the franchise stripped him of the role and opted to enter training camp without a designated captain.

Reflecting on his new status within the locker room, Larkin offered a measured perspective to WDIV ClickOnDetroit: I’m back at the bottom of the totem pole, which, you know, may be kind of nice.
Complicating his return to the team, Larkin sat out the opening day of training camp on the ice after sustaining an upper-body injury during off-ice training earlier in the week, Yahoo Sports reported based on updates from Interim General Manager Shawn Horcoff. Larkin expressed clear frustration over the setback.
“I wish so bad that I could be on the ice. I’m pushing to get healthy, and I want to be out there. This is a very unfortunate timing, and I wish I could show with my actions how to build trust with my teammates again and with the fans.”

Roster Outlook and the Road Ahead for Detroit
While the trade request remains unresolved and a return to the franchise’s leadership core appears unlikely, Larkin is under contract and participating in team activities in Detroit. Head coach Todd Red Wings head coach Todd McClellan addressed the forward’s immediate future as the club prepares for the 2026-27 campaign.
I do know that he has come to training camp, he’s a signed player, and we’re going to play him.
Larkin acknowledges that hostile receptions may await him from home fans when games get underway at Little Caesars Arena.
“I can’t really control that. They’re passionate fans. There’s frustration there. I’m frustrated, as well. I just hope that there’s 22 other guys in the room. It’s about them, not about one guy. We’re going to hopefully move on.”
