Saint-Denis Dojo, based in Saint-Denis-lès-Bourg in the Ain department of France, operates as a dynamic martial arts hub with approximately 250 licensed members serving a local population of 5,535 residents. Founded in 2003 as an independent entity after separating from the JC Bourg-en-Bresse, the club has evolved into an organizer of international competition and a pillar of community sports education in the Rhône-Alpes region.
Origins and Foundation in Saint-Denis-lès-Bourg
The club took shape in 2003 when legal issues at the prefecture structure in Bourg-en-Bresse prompted coach Pierre Neyra to seek a new home. Benefiting from strong local government backing, Neyra secured administrative approval within fifteen days to utilize a brand-new 250-square-meter dojo constructed by the Saint-Denis-lès-Bourg municipality. During its inaugural season, the club registered roughly 150 licenses, propelled by enthusiastic parental support and the presence of elite talent.
That initial roster included Jérôme Guyot, a first-division competitor who earned a bronze medal at the 2002 European Cadets Championships in Győr, Hungary, and another bronze at the French Junior Championships the following year. Guyot’s presence provided crucial early visibility for the municipality and generated significant momentum for the club before he later moved to a Parisian club.
The Open Bresse International Tournament
In 2007, club administrators launched a major competitive venture by establishing the Open Bresse International tournament. After overcoming initial logistical challenges during its first two years, the event grew substantially, drawing approximately 800 combatants from roughly a dozen European nations over a single weekend.
Organizing the tournament requires the coordinated efforts of about 80 club volunteers to maintain standards across each edition. The seventh installment of the competition is scheduled for March 1 and 2.
Programs, Governance, and Community Outreach
Led by President Stella Nuguet, Secretary Marie-Catherine Neyra, Treasurer Valérie Carrage, and Responsable Open Bresse International Jean Ortega, Saint-Denis Dojo offers instruction in judo, jujitsu, and Taiso—including Taiso Santé sessions geared toward health and fitness—for practitioners of all levels. Coaching duties are shared by instructors Raymond Quiles, Cyril Dupont, and Pierre Neyra.
Beyond its core membership, the club’s five students of the Brevet d’Etat regularly assist neighboring local clubs in Marboz and Servas that lack coaching succession, helping sustain judo instruction throughout the surrounding area. The club also offers local partners and businesses the opportunity to display their logos permanently on tatamis within the facility.
