As reported by outlets monitoring the move, AS Monaco needed to clear a foreign player quota spot before finalizing the paperwork for Lira. Once roster space opened up in France, negotiations between Cruz Azul and the Ligue 1 outfit moved swiftly to completion.
For Lira, the move represents the realization of a long-held career ambition. Velázquez noted that the club had maintained a standing commitment to support the midfielder if a viable European opportunity materialized, allowing him to follow a trajectory similar to other high-profile Mexican exports.
Roster Shifts and Failed Deals at Cruz Azul
While celebrating Lira’s departure to European football, Cruz Azul leadership also addressed other squad adjustments during a presentation for “Nación Azul,” an initiative designed to connect with international supporters. Velázquez disclosed that La Máquina had been on the verge of securing forward Joao Pedro from Atlético de San Luis in a transaction that would have simultaneously sent Amaury Morales to the rival club.
That prospective deal collapsed abruptly after Joao Pedro suffered a torn right cruciate ligament on a Friday. Complicating matters further, Amaury Morales sustained an injury the very next day, bringing an immediate halt to the planned roster exchange.
Infrastructure Plans Move Forward
Alongside roster management, Velázquez provided updates on Cruz Azul’s ongoing efforts to build a dedicated stadium. Finding suitable land has proven challenging, but club executives are evaluating several alternative sites to establish a permanent home ground for the institution and its fan base.
