Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer withdrew from the England squad for Nations League fixtures to focus on his physical recovery, a decision defended by club teammate Morgan Rogers amid public criticism over the player’s international absence.
Palmer has featured only three times for England since Tuchel took charge of the national team in January 2025, having missed the 2026 World Cup squad and multiple previous camps due to lingering groin and muscle issues that troubled him throughout last season.
Morgan Rogers Backs Chelsea Teammate’s Recovery Strategy
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Chelsea summer signing Morgan Rogers emphasized that Palmer is entirely justified in prioritizing his physical state over international selection. Rogers noted that players must manage their workloads carefully to avoid repeating the grueling physical struggles of the previous campaign.
“I love playing with Cole. I love being around him,” Rogers told the Daily Mail. “Unfortunately, he couldn’t be here, but he’s got to focus on his body. He needs to be in a good physical state. Obviously, as a nation, you want Cole Palmer and players like that in an English shirt, but it’s not what is possible with the games and what we’ve got coming up. You have to manage yourself, especially after what he went through last year; he doesn’t want to go through that again.”
Opting out of international duty offers a cautious path forward for Palmer, minimizing the risk of worsening an existing minor muscle strain. Staying fit and performing consistently at Stamford Bridge could ultimately serve as his most reliable route back into Tuchel’s squad.
Wider Squad Pullouts and Chelsea Injury Concerns
Palmer is far from the only high-profile player sidelined during the international window. Several Premier League stars, including Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento, and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, also withdrew from the England squad due to various injuries.

For Chelsea, the international break arrives in the wake of a difficult 3-0 Premier League defeat to Brentford. Compounding manager concerns, club captain Reece James sustained a hamstring injury in the week leading up to that fixture, forcing him out of the Brentford match and keeping him out of England contention. Meanwhile, teammate Levi Colwill was omitted by Tuchel in favor of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
Despite the current setbacks, Palmer, James, and Colwill retain opportunities to reclaim their places in the national setup. Two additional international breaks are scheduled for early November and late March ahead of the UEFA Nations League finals in June.
Next Fixture and Return Outlook
Chelsea return to domestic action in a Premier League fixture against Bournemouth on October 10 at Stamford Bridge.
