Club Brugge secured a dominant 3-0 victory over KRC Genk at the Jan Breydel Stadium, extending their strong start to the season just before the long international break. Ivan Leko’s side claimed 18 points from their first 21 available, leaving Genk struggling with just nine points from seven matches.
A First-Half Breakthrough for Club Brugge
The home side established control early against a Genk team that entered the match without an away win this season. Club Brugge capitalized on their territorial advantage in the 15th minute when Hans Vanaken slipped a precise through-ball to Forbs. The Portuguese winger shook off Joris Kayembe at the edge of the penalty area before firing past goalkeeper Brughmans to open the scoring.
Genk nearly equalized just before halftime. Tolu Arokodare’s compatriot Durosinmi set up a clear opportunity for Erenbjerg, who found himself one-on-one with Club Brugge goalkeeper Yann Sommer. The veteran Swiss shot-stopper produced a crucial reaction save to preserve the home side’s lead after recent weeks marked by inconsistent performances.
Second-Half Goals Seal the Win
Club Brugge maintained their pressure after the interval. Nicolo Tresoldi thought he had doubled the lead early in the second half, but the video assistant referee (VAR) overturned the effort for offside. Blauw-zwart did not have to wait long for a legitimate second goal, however. Barely five minutes later, a cross from Joaquin Seys picked out Lee, who headed in his first goal for the club.
Brandon Mechele completed the scoring in similar fashion. The Belgian central defender met another accurate delivery from Seys and headed past Brughmans to make it 3-0, compounding a difficult evening for Thorup’s visiting squad.
Standings and Squad Context
The result leaves Club Brugge firmly near the top of the standings with 18 points from seven outings under coach Ivan Leko. The victory featured returns to the starting lineup for recent national team call-up Kyriani Sabbe and captain Hans Vanaken, alongside Tresoldi, who had started on the bench in the previous fixture against Royal Antwerp FC.
