Chelsea earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Lyon at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, snapping the eight-time European champions’ scoring streak and overcoming a heavy fixture turnaround.

Chelsea prevented Lyon from scoring for the first time in 20 Champions League matches. The fixture marked the first meeting between the two sides since a dramatic 2023 quarter-final where the Blues knocked out the holders under Sonia Bompastor, who now leads Chelsea.
After a cagey first half characterized by tentative play from two of Europe’s most competitive clubs, the game opened up significantly after the break. Lyon’s Salma Paralluelo registered the best chance of the opening period, driving a strong angled shot straight into the hands of Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.
Disallowed Goals and VAR Drama
Early in the restart, Chelsea appealed for a penalty resulting in a booking for Tarciane, who fouled Sjoeke Nusken in the box. The referee whistled only after Lucy Bronze had interfered from an offside position.
Shortly after, Chelsea captain Lucy Bronze stepped up defensively to prevent what looked like a certain opening goal, vitally blocking Marie-Antoinette Katoto. Katoto entered the match fresh off scoring a Champions League hat-trick against Swiss side Servette.
With 20 minutes remaining, Paralluelo thought she had broken the deadlock by stroking the ball past Hampton, but the linesperson raised the flag for offside. Minutes later, Chelsea were awarded a penalty when Lauren James went down under pressure from Salma Bacha. That decision was subsequently overturned following a video assistant referee (VAR) review.
Late Chances Go Begging
Substitute Lauren James passed up Chelsea’s clearest opening in the 89th minute, firing straight at Lyon goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs after Alyssa Thompson manufactured a marauding run down the pitch to find her unmarked in the box.
At the other end, Hampton preserved the clean sheet with a brilliant full-stretch leap to keep out a header from Ada Hegerberg that appeared destined for the far corner. During a lengthy stoppage time period, Chelsea launched one final assault. Wieke Kaptein found Maika Hamano at the front post, whose clever touch beat Grohs but trickled just the wrong side of the post.
Fixture Congestion and Tactical Positives for Bompastor
Bompastor overcame a severe fixture disadvantage heading into the tie. Chelsea faced a tight three-day turnaround filled with rest, travel, and preparation following an energetic Women’s Super League victory against Arsenal. In contrast, the French top flight factors in dedicated rest breaks for teams competing in Europe. Lyon had not played a competitive fixture since their 8-0 Champions League opener against Servette the previous Wednesday.
Beyond securing a clean sheet against a fully rested opponent, Bompastor praised the performance of 20-year-old midfielder Lexi Potter. Fresh off earning her first senior call-up for England earlier in the week, Potter started the match and held her own across the full 90 minutes.
