Former Brazil international Alexandre Pato has expanded his footprint in sports business by leading an investment consortium that acquired a controlling 70% stake in English fourth-tier club Northampton Town. The transaction, finalized by the investment vehicle Sports Alpha Capital, marks a transition into club ownership for the retired striker, who concluded his professional playing career in early 2025.
Acquisition Structure and Club Finances
Northampton Town Ventures Limited, the holding company for the League Two club, completed the sale with its financial sheets entirely cleared of debt. According to official club disclosures, outgoing owners David Bower, Nigel Le Quesne, and Kelvin Thomas retain a combined 30% minority equity interest in the enterprise.
Kelvin Thomas steps down from his decade-long tenure as chairman of the institution, though he remains on the board as a director alongside his retained shareholding. Meanwhile, Sports Alpha Capital founders Joao Xavier and Tim Chamberlain assume executive duties as co-chairmen, tasked with executing the group’s operational strategy for the Northamptonshire outfit.

Leadership Vision and Financial Sustainability
In a joint statement released to supporters following the completion of the deal, the newly installed executive leadership emphasized a commitment to disciplined financial management alongside competitive progress. “We are very pleased to have completed our investment in the Northampton Town Football Club and extremely proud to assume the management of a club with such a rich history, a passionate fanbase, and an important role in its community,” Xavier and Chamberlain stated. “We have ambitious plans for Northampton Town, but ambition must walk hand in hand with sustainability and the understanding of what the club represents for the people of Northampton and Northamptonshire.”
Pato, whose playing career included spells at AC Milan, Chelsea, Corinthians, São Paulo, and the Brazil national team after beginning at Internacional, celebrated the takeover across his social media channels, calling it a historic milestone and describing the acquisition as “New leather. The same soul.”
Broader Investment Strategy in English Football
The successful purchase of Northampton Town follows earlier efforts by Pato’s consortium to secure a foothold in the English lower leagues. In February, Sports Alpha Capital engaged in formal discussions to acquire Colchester United, another League Two side. Those negotiations collapsed after the Colchester board withdrew from talks, redirecting the investment fund toward the Northamptonshire acquisition.
Current On-Field Standing and Rebuilding Challenges
While the ownership change brings long-term financial stability, the squad faces immediate sporting hurdles. Northampton Town suffered relegation at the conclusion of the previous campaign, finishing the season at the foot of the third-tier table. The team has experienced a difficult start in League Two, sitting 22nd in the standings with a record of one victory from its opening seven fixtures under the current campaign.
Aside from the senior men’s division, the club operates a women’s professional team that also competes within the English football pyramid’s fourth tier.
