Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson faces a complex roster puzzle entering training camp, balancing a star-heavy starting lineup with a crowded pool of 13 players competing for crucial spots in his regular 10-man rotation.

Roster Configuration and the Starting Five

With the acquisition of Peyton Watson, the outline of Cleveland’s starting five appears to be taking shape. Watson, formerly of the Denver Nuggets, projects to slot onto the wing alongside perimeter stars James Harden and Donovan Mitchell, while Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen anchor the frontcourt in the paint. Yet, Atkinson has resisted calling the lineup permanent.

“To begin with, the starting five is not yet fixed,” Atkinson said. “There is training camp and we have new players. We have to see how things work. It’s going to take time to find out.”

Rotation Depth and the Battle for Bench Minutes

Last season, the Cavaliers’ bench struggled to maintain consistent production during the playoffs. While the talent of the starters carries the team through the 82-game regular season, Atkinson noted that postseason basketball demands a deeper, more reliable contribution from reserves, particularly on the defensive end.

“I would say our depth is one of our strengths,” Atkinson said. “My main concern is my 10-player rotation. Who will be in it? That is my subject. I probably have 13 players right now who could be in that Top 10. In terms of depth, I am served.”

Training Camp Competition on the Wings

The competition for playing time is expected to be particularly fierce on the wings as players battle to secure minutes under the new coaching staff. Atkinson highlighted the competitive drive within the roster as training camp approaches.

“I can’t wait for training camp to start because it’s going to be intense,” Atkinson said. “The guys are competitors and will be hungry to get minutes. On the wing, it’s the same. I don’t think Nae’Qwan Tomlin is going to let go. Mario Hezonja, whose career has been superb over the last five years, will also be in the discussion.”

Atkinson and the Cavaliers have the span of the regular season to evaluate combinations and settle on a definitive rotation before the spring postseason schedule begins.
