The golf facility in western France is scheduled to celebrate its tenth anniversary with a series of public events on September 26 and 27, 2026, bringing renewed attention to the long-term urban planning strategy behind its creation.
The Strategic Vision Behind the Public Investment
Jean-Michel Bernier served as mayor of Bressuire from 2000 to 2020. During his tenure, establishing the golf course and pairing it with a large-scale real estate initiative known as the Villages du golf stood out as a core municipal objective.
Reflecting on the motivations behind the public investment, Bernier explained that the sports facility was actually a byproduct of a broader land-use strategy rather than an isolated recreation project.
Reining in Outward Urban Expansion
According to Bernier, municipal housing subdivisions at the time were primarily developing in associated outlying communes rather than the central city.
Private developers drove most of the residential expansion happening directly within Bressuire. Municipal leaders wanted to steer urban growth and rein in outward expansion through a structured development plan, framing the initiative first and foremost as an urban planning operation.
Roots in Local Infrastructure
The concept for the golf course emerged naturally from existing local infrastructure.
A pitch-and-putt course already operated near the municipal equestrian center. This indicated a built-in local appetite for the sport and established a foundation for a larger facility.
Delays Facing the Residential Component
While the sports amenities took root and reached their upcoming decennial milestone, the housing component tied to the project faced prolonged delays.
Ten years after the initial launch, the residential developments attached to the municipal venture remain incomplete.
