Celtic forward Benjamin Nygren is having a complex start to the campaign in Scotland. He balances a strong personal goalscoring run with turbulent team results that include European disappointment and domestic pressure.
Individual Output Amid Collective Turbulence
The 25-year-old attacker finished last season as the club’s internal top scorer during a domestic league and cup double. This term, he has contributed five goals and six assists across twelve matches.
Yet that individual productivity has unfolded against a backdrop of collective turbulence for the league leaders. Celtic currently sit at the summit of the domestic standings, but they find themselves competing in the UEFA Europa League after crashing out of the Champions League qualifiers against Austrian side LASK. This was compounded by consecutive defeats to rivals Rangers.
Sharp Contrasts in Glasgow
Reflecting on the opening months of the season, Nygren pointed to the sharp contrasts in the club’s fortunes.
“It’s been a bit up and down and mixed. We missed out on the Champions League place and it was very tight again this year. Last year we missed out on penalties and now we had a 3-0 lead, which we blew away from home, which was extra heavy,” he said, noting the recent domestic setbacks against Rangers.
Despite heavy scrutiny from Scottish media and supporters during the slump, Nygren steers clear of public commentary.
“As you yourselves know, those of you who work in media, things tend to be black or white. As a player, there is no point in going in and reading things that people write in moments like that. You don’t gain anything from going in and reading stupid comments,” he explained.
Embracing the Demands of a Major Club
The forward embraces the intense atmosphere surrounding the club. He views the passionate fan base as a positive reflection of what football means in Glasgow.
“It’s very difficult to describe, but football really means everything there, which I think is very nice and something you shouldn’t take for granted,” Nygren said.
He added that the demand for victory at every turn is precisely why he sought a move to a major club where the pressure forces professional and personal growth.
High Praise From a Club Icon
That heavyweight status recently earned Nygren praise from club icon Henrik Larsson. During a recent Q&A session, the former Swedish national team forward named Nygren as the current Celtic player he would most want to line up alongside.
Hearing the endorsement from the striker brought a lighthearted reaction from the current star.
“Stiff if he had said someone else,” Nygren joked, before revealing his virtual history with the icon. “I’ve played a lot with him on FIFA, where I usually buy him in as a legend in my team, and link up a bit.”
Dreaming of a Real-World Partnership
Nygren admitted he would relish the chance to feed Larsson passes in a real match scenario.
“If you don’t have enough chemistry, the players can’t play at their best. I’ve always tried to buy him in, so I can link up with myself. It’s great fun to hear and I would have loved to play with him in reality. I would have found him a lot, so he hopefully could have scored even more goals.”
The two have never met in person at a Celtic fixture.
Following the international break, Nygren and his Celtic teammates return to domestic action away against Motherwell on October 11, before traveling to face Benfica in the Europa League.
