French athlete Agathe Guillemot claimed the gold medal and set a European record in the women’s mile at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, closing out an arduous 2026 season with her first global title.
Agathe Guillemot Secures Gold and European Record in Copenhagen
Competing on the streets of Copenhagen on Saturday, the 27-year-old French runner crossed the finish line of the road race (about 1,609 m) in 4 minutes and 22.74 seconds, according to race reports. Guillemot outpaced Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu, who finished second in 4:24.35, and Kenya’s Mirriam Cherop, who took third in 4:25.71. Her winning time established a new European record for the distance, eclipsing the previous mark of 4:23.25 set earlier in September by British runner Jemma Reekie.
Guillemot navigated a tactical race by staying tucked behind the leaders against a headwind during the early kilometers. Speaking about her strategy, she noted that the first kilometer featured a straight section with a notable headwind, prompting her to stay protected behind Hailu before launching her decisive kick in the final hundreds of meters. She stated that she wanted to dictate the law when the opportunity arose.
A Crowning Achievement After a Season of Close Calls
The victory in Denmark brings a breakthrough conclusion to a 2026 campaign that had featured multiple near-misses for the Breton athlete. Earlier in the year, Guillemot finished fourth in the 1,500-meter event at the World Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, in March, and secured another fourth-place finish at the European Championships in Birmingham, United Kingdom, in August. She also competed consistently near the front in Diamond League meetings throughout the summer without securing a victory.

Reflecting on her summer campaign, Guillemot noted her consistent high level of performance across the circuit while emphasizing the unique significance of securing a championship victory. This road mile title adds to her resume, which includes a European indoor title in the 1,500 meters won in 2025.
Field Context and Men’s Division Highlights
The elite women’s mile field in Copenhagen proceeded without several prominent global competitors, including Poland’s Klaudia Kazimierska, Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell, and the United States’ Nikki Hiltz, who finished first, second, and third respectively at the recent Ultimate 1,500-meter track championships and did not make the trip to Denmark.
In the men’s division of the world running championships—marking the second iteration of the global event following its inaugural edition in Riga in 2023, after the planned 2025 event in San Diego was canceled due to logistical and budgetary reasons—Germany’s Robert Farken claimed the victory with a time of 3:51.80. American runner Yared Nuguse finished second in 3:52.33, and the Netherlands’ Ruben Querinjean placed third in 3:52.77.
Competition at the World Road Running Championships continues with a five-kilometer race scheduled for Saturday afternoon, followed by the half-marathon events on Sunday.
