AC Milan revives interest in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could depart Olympique de Marseille during the upcoming winter transfer window after previously coming close to joining Newcastle United. Calciomercato reports that Italian club AC Milan are prepared to revive their interest in the Danish midfielder, who remains an integral part of manager Bruno Genesio’s squad at the Orange Vélodrome.

AC Milan Revives Interest in Winter Window

The Serie A club previously pursued the 31-year-old midfielder and appear ready to position themselves again for a potential transfer. Rossoneri manager Ruben Amorim is an admirer of the Denmark international, whose current market value stands at €15 M€ according to Transfermarkt data. That valuation places him as the fourth most valuable player in the Marseille first-team squad, trailing only Igor Paixao, Amine Gouiri, and Timothy Weah.

Hojbjerg joined Marseille during the summer of 2024 on an initial 12-month loan before completing a permanent transfer for 13,50 M€. Since his arrival at the French club, he has made 81 appearances across all competitions, including 67 matches in Ligue 1.

The Failed Newcastle Move and Financial Pressures

Hojbjerg’s future at Marseille has generated ongoing speculation following a near-complete transfer to Newcastle United in a prior window. An agreement between Marseille and the English club was close to being finalized before the defensive midfielder ultimately turned down the Magpies. That rejection complicated the French club’s strategy to offload several high-earning veteran players as part of an effort to reduce their wage bill.

Despite those exit discussions, Hojbjerg remains under contract with the Phocéens until June 2028. He has maintained his status as a regular starter under Genesio, featuring in the starting lineup for all five of Marseille’s opening Ligue 1 matches of the campaign.

Squad Valuation and Future Outlook

Marseille faces ongoing sporting and financial challenges that could influence their approach to the upcoming market. While Hojbjerg is willing to make financial sacrifices to accommodate wage adjustments within Genesio’s squad, the club’s financial climate means officials might entertain significant offers.
