The Competitors: Aonishiki Arata and Christa Deguchi
Aonishiki Arata competes as an ozeki in professional sumo under the Ajigawa stable. Born in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, he began sumo training at age seven and made his professional debut in September 2023. After reaching the makuuchi division in March 2025, he claimed his first top-division title in January 2025 and earned promotion to ozeki. Though an injury forced him to sit out the May tournament and briefly drop to sekiwake, he rebounded with his third makuuchi championship in July 2026 to reclaim the ozeki rank. His preferred techniques are migi-yotsu (right-hand inside grip) and yori (forceful forward drive).
Christa Deguchi represents Nippon Life as a judoka after beginning her training at age three in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture. During her time at Shosho Gakuen High School, she won the Inter-High School Championship. Competing internationally for Canada—her father’s home country—she captured two world championship titles and secured the gold medal in the women’s 57kg division at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, marking Canada’s first Olympic gold medal in judo. She announced her retirement from active competition in March 2026.
