Months after Germany’s exit from the international tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, ZDF television expert Friederike „Fritzy“ Kromp has addressed her harsh criticism of former national team coach Julian Nagelsmann.”
The Penalty That Sparked a Broadcast Firestorm
Kromp, who worked as an analyst for the German public broadcaster alongside former internationals Christoph Kramer and Per Mertesacker as well as former Freiburg Bundesliga coach Christian Streich, admitted in an interview with Bild that she regrets the emotional delivery of her commentary.
Inside the ‘Killed’ Remark Over Nick Woltemade
The focal point of Kromp’s self-reflection involves her remarks following Germany’s penalty-shootout elimination against Paraguay in the Round of 16. During the post-match broadcast, Kromp asserted that Nagelsmann had “killed” striker Nick Woltemade by failing to utilize him in earlier matches of the tournament. Woltemade subsequently missed a penalty kick during his first appearance of the competition.
“I was emotional in that moment,” Kromp told Bild roughly eight weeks after the national team’s exit. “I felt it that way, but in the end, I should have expressed it differently.”
Regret Over Phrasing and Silence With Nagelsmann
Kromp acknowledged that she grew frustrated with her own choice of words as time passed. While maintaining that her underlying assessment stemmed from genuine feelings during a high-stakes fixture, she conceded that the phrasing was unfortunate. She has not spoken with Nagelsmann since the conclusion of the tournament and his subsequent departure from the national team post.
Broadcasting Continuity and Werder Bremen
Despite the controversy surrounding her tournament commentary, Kromp’s television career continues. She has served as an expert analyst for ZDF since 2022, covering international fixtures and UEFA Champions League matches, and is slated to continue her work in the European competition.
Alongside her broadcasting duties, Kromp stepped into club management last summer by taking over as head coach of the Frauen-Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, marking her first engagement as head coach in the German women’s top flight.
