Former NHL defenseman Zdeno Chára bid farewell to his professional playing career with a packed, emotional farewell match at Pavol Demitra Stadium in Trenčín, Slovakia, featuring hockey legends, family moments, and poignant tributes to his late father.
A Star-Studded Farewell in Trenčín
According to reports from regional media outlets including Sportnet and Sport24, the sold-out exhibition match drew thousands of fans from Slovakia and North America to watch a roster of hockey greats. The ice featured high-profile NHL veterans such as Jaromír Jágr, Patrice Bergeron, David Pastrňák, Milan Lucic, Anže Kopitar, and Marián Hossa. The loudest ovations of the evening, however, were reserved for Chára—a towering defenseman who skated in more than 1,600 regular-season NHL games and captured the Stanley Cup as captain of the Boston Bruins.
Sharing the Ice With Family
One of the most memorable sequences of the night occurred when Chára took the ice alongside his sons, Brian and Zack. In a moment that delighted the home crowd, both boys managed to get their names on the scoreboard as goalscorers. Speaking to reporters after the final buzzer, Chára struggled to put the experience into words. “Really amazing, I can’t speak. It’s hard for me to express,” Chára said, as reported by Sport24. “I remember when I used to come here as a little boy. It went by terribly fast. It will be something for me that I will not forget for the rest of my life, and I believe for them too.”
Emotional Tribute to Zdeněk Chára
The arena atmosphere shifted from celebratory to deeply emotional during the 38th minute of the game. Following a traditional fan chant honoring the late Slovak star Pavol Demitra, the crowd turned its attention to Chára’s father, Zdeněk Chára, who passed away in April. Spectators throughout the stadium stood and chanted his name, leaving the veteran defenseman visibly moved with tears in his eyes. “He was a big sports fan, it’s a great loss,” Chára told reporters after the game, acknowledging that his father had desperately wanted to attend the event. “He put a tremendous amount of heart into sport. He desperately wanted to be at this match, but unfortunately… So he looked at us from up there.”

International Turnout and Global Fans
Chára praised the dedication of the fans who made the cross-continental journey from the United States and Canada, noting the vibrant atmosphere created by the supporters’ section and the global hockey community in attendance.
