The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has appointed former Barcelona star Xavi Hernández as the new head coach of the Netherlands men’s national team, locking in a contract that runs through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The 46-year-old Spanish manager succeeds Ronald Koeman, whose tenure concluded following the team’s elimination at the previous World Cup, where Oranje fell in the round of 16 on penalties against Morocco.
Xavi takes over his first role as a national team coach after spending two years without a club. His previous managerial stops include Qatari side Al-Sadd and a tenure at Barcelona, where he guided the Catalan giants to the Spanish Super Cup and their first La Liga title since the 2018–19 season during the 2022–23 campaign.
Xavi Cites Deep Roots in Dutch Football Philosophy
Speaking on his appointment, Xavi expressed a unique connection to the Netherlands, pointing to his formative years coming through the academy at FC Barcelona under the ideological umbrella of Johan Cruijff and Rinus Michels.
“I feel a special connection to Dutch football,” Xavi told the KNVB. “You could say I am a bit of a son of Dutch football. Other great coaches, especially Louis van Gaal, who gave me my debut at Barcelona, and Frank Rijkaard, also played an important role in my development as a player and coach.”
The newly appointed bondscoach outlined an ambitious tactical approach centered on possession and attacking intent. He noted that while winning remains the ultimate objective, he wants to achieve victories through creativity, passion, and conviction.
“Netherlands has a rich football culture and a clear vision that appeals to me enormously,” Xavi said. “The potential is there, along with a great foundation to build upon. I look forward to starting this challenge together with the players, staff, and everyone within the KNVB.”
KNVB Directors Point to Proven Winning Pedigree
Director of Elite Football Nigel de Jong emphasized that Xavi’s extensive background at the highest levels of the game made him the ideal candidate to steer the national team through the upcoming tournament cycles.
“Xavi has experienced and won everything as a player alone, including a world title, multiple league titles, and Champions League titles,” De Jong stated via the KNVB. “As a manager, he has been shaped by years of working with top coaches who carry out a football vision that aligns very well with how we want to play with the Dutch national team: taking the initiative, dominant and attractive football, combined with the flexibility that modern top football demands.”
Director of Professional Football Marianne van Leeuwen echoed those sentiments, noting that the Spaniard understands what is required to succeed at the highest tier of international competition.
“With Xavi, we bring in someone who knows the absolute top of international football as a player and coach,” Van Leeuwen said. “He knows what it takes to be successful at the highest level and brings that experience to the Dutch national team.”
Contrasting Approaches and Notable History
The appointment marks a surprising turn for the KNVB, which had also considered other candidates such as Roberto Martínez before finalizing the agreement with the former midfielder.
For international football supporters, Xavi also carries a distinct historical footprint regarding the Netherlands. As a player, he anchored Spain’s midfield in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final in Johannesburg, where Spain defeated the Netherlands 1–0 after extra time.
