Guardiola was top choice before sabbatical
Nigel de Jong, the KNVB technical director, confirmed the approach.
Guardiola ultimately declined the opportunity because he wanted to take a sabbatical.
Slot talks centered on tactical vision
Following Guardiola’s decision, the Dutch football governing body turned its attention to Arne Slot. De Jong confirmed that the KNVB held two rounds of discussions with Slot regarding the national team position.
However, after those meetings, Slot indicated that he preferred to continue coaching at club level for the foreseeable future.
According to De Jong, the discussions with Slot did not center on contract duration or financial terms. Instead, the talks focused strictly on Slot’s tactical vision, methodology, and overall working philosophy.
Interviews with Xavi and Reiziger
After missing out on Guardiola and Slot, the KNVB expanded its recruitment efforts to include Xavi Hernández and Michael Reiziger. De Jong and supervisory board member Clarence Seedorf conducted extensive interviews with both candidates earlier in the month.
Why Xavi secured the Oranje post
The KNVB ultimately appointed Xavi Hernández to lead Oranje. De Jong explained that the decision to hire the former Barcelona and Al-Sadd manager came down to his demonstrated passion, commitment to a dominant style of play, extensive top-level experience, and strong leadership personality.
Additionally, the governing body felt that Xavi possessed a firm grasp of Dutch football culture and the identity expected of the national team.
Reiziger remains in future calculations
Addressing speculation surrounding the recruitment process, De Jong pushed back against suggestions that Michael Reiziger had been passed over due to media criticism regarding his limited experience at the highest level of senior management.

De Jong reaffirmed the KNVB’s confidence in Reiziger and noted that the association does not rule out the possibility of him taking charge of the national team in the future.
