Unseeded Indian shuttler Hmar Laithazuala produced the biggest upset of the 9th Lagos International Badminton Classics on Friday, defeating tournament favorite and top seed Misha Zilberman of Israel to secure his place in the men’s singles final.
Dominant Semifinal Victory at the National Stadium
Playing at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Institute of Sports within the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, Laithazuala delivered a dominant performance against an injured Zilberman.
“I need to take a bow, out of the competition. It’s been a tough one, with others hungry to win as well,” Zilberman said after the exit.
“Zilberman is a great player and I need to respect that. I am happy to win,” Laithazuala said. The victory marks a significant career milestone for the unseeded player, who added, “This is my first career appearance in the finals on international level. See everyone at the finals.”
An All-Unseeded Men’s Singles Final Lineup
Saturday’s championship match features an all-unseeded showdown as Laithazuala faces compatriot Tankara Talasila. Talasila punched his ticket to the final after surviving a grueling battle against third-seeded Dmitriy Panarin of Kazakhstan. Talasila won the encounter 21-19, 20-22, 21-1.
The semifinal match between Talasila and Panarin ranked among the longest and most fiercely contested battles of the day.
