Ugandan Boxing Team Members Missing After Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Four members of the Ugandan boxing team, including Nuhu Batte, have failed to return home following the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, prompting an official missing persons inquiry by Scottish authorities.

Scottish Police Open Inquiry Into Missing Ugandan Boxers

Police Scotland confirmed on Wednesday that an active investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of four athletes from the Ugandan delegation. A force spokesperson stated that initial exchanges have already taken place with the United Kingdom Home Office regarding the missing competitors.

The athletes unaccounted for include Nuhu Batte, Emily Nakalema, Ibrahim Kemis, and Angel Katushabe. The group comprised part of a six-person boxing squad that traveled to Scotland to compete in the international tournament last week.

Ugandan Boxing Federation Urges Caution Over Visas

Speaking to international media outlets, Uganda Boxing Federation President Muhangi Moses pushed back against declaring the athletes officially missing. He noted that the travel documents held by the four competitors remain active under current immigration guidelines.

“Their visas are still valid, we cannot confirm their ‘disappearance’ until their duration has been exceeded,” Muhangi Moses said. The federation head emphasized that prematurely labeling the athletes as missing overlooks the legal validity of their current entry clearance into the United Kingdom.

Contrasting Returns Highlight Split Delegation Status

While the four athletes remain in Scotland, two members of the original six-person boxing contingent successfully returned to Uganda. Aziz Abdul—noted as the grandson of former Ugandan leader Idi Amin Dada—and teammate Alfred Ojok arrived back in the country on Tuesday.

The safe return of Abdul and Ojok narrows the scope of the current police inquiry to the remaining quartet.
