Trump Declares “Economic War” on Iran with Unprecedented Sanctions Campaign

The United States has pivoted its strategy toward Iran to an unprecedented economic isolation campaign, dubbed an “economic day D” by Washington. The shift follows the drawdown of military assets in the Persian Gulf and stalled diplomatic efforts.

Washington Unveils Total Economic War Against Tehran

US President Donald Trump announced the sweeping financial offensive on his social media platform, Truth Social. He warned that any nation providing a lifeline to Tehran will face severe economic consequences.

“Today I am announcing the most devastating economic operation ever undertaken against any country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, describing the initiative as an unprecedented economic war and isolation strategy.

Targeting Oil Smuggling and Financial Networks

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the sweeping campaign of sanctions. However, officials have not established a fixed timeline for the implementation.

The measures target oil smuggling, foreign exchange lines, cash transfers, currency exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies. It operates alongside the military campaign designated Operation Epic Fury, a joint campaign with its ally Israel.

To enforce the new strategy, the Washington administration has reimposed sanctions previously lifted under a June agreement. It has also stepped up naval blockades around Iranian ports.

A Strategic Shift Following Military Strain

The new posture arrives after a series of military and diplomatic complications in the region. A memorandum of understanding signed in June aimed for a 60-day ceasefire, but hostilities resumed quickly.

That resumption led to two consecutive weeks of US airstrikes on Iran and retaliatory Iranian strikes against US regional bases. Pentagon officials subsequently informed Trump that US missile reserves had dwindled near minimum levels and that nearly all designated military targets inside Iran had been struck.

Despite those strikes, the Iranian regime remains in place. It retains control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, while its nuclear program has been degraded rather than destroyed.

The Departure of the USS Abraham Lincoln

The diplomatic and financial pivot coincides with significant naval movements. The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier departed the Gulf region for home last week.

The withdrawal came amid reports of strain among military personnel. It followed a six-month military campaign and stalled diplomacy.

Global Friction and Pressure on Beijing

The aggressive economic posture poses potential friction for international trade, particularly regarding China. Beijing remains the primary buyer of Iranian crude oil, accounting for more than 80 percent of Iran’s seaborne exports.

Meanwhile, the White House has called on international allies to join the isolation effort, characterizing the Iranian leadership as cornered.

“We need all our allies to stand with the US to isolate and defeat the Iranian threat,” Trump stated, asserting that the comprehensive measures are designed to leave the regime paralyzed and restrict its capacity to project terror worldwide.
